Your Names, They Shape Us

Your Names, They Shape Us was inspired by an sermon series my churches Senior Pastor did early after her call to our church. It reflects on some of the names, identities, and images we attribute to God in an attempt to understand God’s call on our lives. In turn, these names shape our own identities as Christians. It is set to the hymn tune EVENTIDE, written by English hymn writer and editor William H. Monk (1823-1889).
In scriptures God, you, go by many names.
Each of them shapes the faith that we all claim.
Yahweh, Jehovah, Shepherd, Bread of Life;
by these we’re shaped and called towards the light.
On mountain side Moses heard your command.
Through burning bush: “I am the Great I am!
Past, present, future, all are one in me.
Vast, beyond measure, endless as the sea!”
We are the branches and you are the vine.
Rooted in you, through us your glory shines!
Shaped for your purpose, we your hands and feet;
to be a neighbor to all those we meet.
You are our refuge; help in times of need.
Manna from heav’n, our souls you come to feed.
Knock at the door, we come and find our rest.
Renewed, restored, we seek to be our best.
You are the potter, we are but the clay.
Mold us and shape us, guide us in your way.
Your names they form us, shape us in your sight;
let us be shaped and called towards the light.
