The Gifts of God are Freely Given was written in honor of the 30th anniversary of my churches organist. It reflects on God’s gifts of music and community. O WALY WALY, the hymn tune setting, is a traditional English and American folk tune.
The Gifts of God are freely giv’n; of song dance, gifts of silence.
Sounds raise our hearts, we look above, words from beyond provide guidance.
The Gifts of God are freely giv’n; laughter and smiles, gifts of friendship.
Communities in union sing praises and prayers, songs of worship.
The Gifts of God are freely giv’n; though tears may flow and darkness forms!
Despair takes hold, we lose our way, God’s melodies will call us home.
The Gifts of God are freely giv’n! Pour’d out with love in many forms!
Some are friendships and some are songs; all give us refuge from the storms.
